Hack: 2-Minute Rule
I learned this from David Allen:
If an action will take less than two minutes, it should be done at the moment it’s defined.
It feels great to bias towards action. If something is a quick action, I’d rather just do it than put it on a list:
- If I can answer a message quickly, I will.
- If I can make a quick fix to some code or docs, I will. It’s better than opening a ticket for me or someone else.
However, I balance this rule with the need to avoid context-switching. When I am in “deep work” mode, I’m less likely to follow the two minute rule.
