Towards an Embodied Life

I sleep better when I am tired from physical things. If I spend too much of my day on a computer, I feel tired in a way that is opposite and inferior to the tired that I feel from doing something physically tiring.

Computers have been a hobby for a long time. I spent hours every day on a computer when I was growing up, trying to learn as much about them as I could – and trying to build cool stuff.

Then they also became my job, in addition to being a hobby. Too much computer time for me!

I still love messing with computers. But I am glad I have picked up some other hobbies since then – especially hobbies that are more embodied.

During the pandemic, I started cycling. I found a reasonably safe way to get from my apartment in Pittsburgh to a major bike trail. I spent many hours outside this way.

A couple of years later, I discovered running. I’ve had so much fun running since then, and I try to get in 2-3 runs per week. I’ve found that when I travel for work, running can be a great way to see the city I’m in; even at home, it is a nice way to discover places.

When we bought a house, I learned that I like some house projects that I disliked as a kid. I guess it feels different when it’s your own idea and your own house. Lately I’ve been getting rid of the gross carpet scraps in the basement and putting down EVA foam floor tiles, cutting them to fit. A few weeks ago, I planted a bunch of “Grow-Low” sumac on our hillside, which required breaking up some rocky soil with a pick. I’m hoping it proves deer-resistant.

I’m not giving up on computers anytime soon, but it’s good to mix it up with hobbies that remind me that I am more than a mind with hands that can operate a keyboard.
